In Qix (GB), the player controls a small marker, with the primary objective being to draw lines to claim a portion of the screen's area. The goal of each level is to claim a certain percentage of the screen, typically 75% or 80%, by drawing closed shapes.

Gameplay in Qix revolves around moving your marker along existing boundaries (screen edges or previously drawn lines) and then starting to draw a new line into the open space. As you draw, a temporary line appears. For this line to become permanent and claim area, you must complete a closed shape by connecting the newly drawn line back to an existing boundary.

There are two types of lines you can draw: fast and slow. A fast line is drawn more quickly but awards fewer points. Conversely, a slow line is drawn significantly slower but grants many more points upon completion of the shape. Choosing the drawing speed is a crucial strategic element, especially when enemies are nearby.

The main enemy in Qix is the Qix itself – a randomly moving, often multi-segmented, zig-zagging line. If the Qix touches the line you are currently drawing before it's completed, or touches your marker, you lose a life. Additionally, there are smaller enemies called Sparx, which travel along the already drawn lines. If a Sparx touches your marker or the line you are currently drawing, you will also lose a life.

To complete a shape, you must draw a line from an existing boundary, move into the open space, and return to another existing boundary, forming an enclosed region. This region will then be filled, and its area will be added to your total claimed percentage. Once you claim a sufficient percentage, the level is completed, and you advance to the next stage with increasing difficulty.

Scores are calculated based on the area claimed and the drawing speed. Claiming more than 75% or 80% (depending on the version) grants significant bonus points. Qix demands a combination of quick reflexes, strategic planning, and the ability to anticipate enemy movements to succeed.
