Saiyuuki World is a side-scrolling action-adventure game developed by Jaleco for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), released exclusively in Japan. The game is based on the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West," putting players in the role of Sun Wukong (Son Goku), a powerful monkey god, on his journey to save the world from demonic forces.
The gameplay of Saiyuuki World focuses on exploration and combat. Players control Sun Wukong as he navigates through diverse levels, ranging from dense forests, caves, volcanoes, to ancient cities. Each level is designed with multiple layers and hidden paths, encouraging players to search for secrets and helpful items.
Sun Wukong's primary attack is his magical staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang (Nyoibo). Initially, the staff has a short range, but it can be upgraded to increase its power and reach. Additionally, Sun Wukong can utilize special magical abilities, such as transforming into different animals to overcome obstacles or attack enemies. For example, transforming into a bird allows him to fly across chasms, or becoming a frog enables him to swim underwater.
Enemies in Saiyuuki World are varied, including various demons, devils, and mythical creatures, each with their unique attack patterns and movements. Players need to understand their weaknesses to defeat them effectively. At the end of each world, players will face a powerful boss, requiring strategy and skill to overcome.
The game also incorporates light RPG elements, as Sun Wukong can collect items that boost his strength, health, or unlock new abilities. Some crucial items include "Peaches of Immortality" for health recovery, "Dragon Eggs" to increase attack power, and "Talismans" for protection against damage. The in-game currency allows players to purchase useful items at hidden shops.
The graphics of Saiyuuki World feature the classic pixel art style characteristic of the NES, with vibrant colors and detailed character and environment designs.
