Introduce

Metroid (NES) is a seminal title in the non-linear action-adventure genre, often credited with establishing the "Metroidvania" subgenre. Players control the protagonist, Samus Aran, an intergalactic bounty hunter, on a mission to infiltrate the Space Pirates' home planet Zebes and prevent them from weaponizing the dangerous Metroid organisms.

The gameplay of Metroid heavily emphasizes exploration. Samus begins with basic abilities and must seek out power-ups scattered throughout Zebes' vast and interconnected map. These upgrades include a more powerful Power Beam, Missiles for opening specific doors or defeating tough enemies, the Morph Ball which allows Samus to curl into a small sphere to navigate tight passages, and Bombs to destroy hidden walls or attack enemies while in Morph Ball form. Defensive upgrades like the Varia Suit (reducing damage) and High Jump Boots (increasing jump height) are also crucial.

Metroid's level design encourages backtracking to previously visited areas to unlock new paths once the appropriate power-up is acquired. This creates a deep sense of freedom and discovery. Enemies range from small creatures to large boss battles against formidable foes like Kraid and Ridley, requiring players to master combat mechanics and utilize the correct weaponry. While there is no in-game map, players must either memorize or draw their own to navigate through various regions such as Brinstar, Norfair, Tourian, and Kraid/Ridley's Lair. The absence of an in-game map contributes to the challenge and allure of the game. Ultimately, the goal is to destroy Mother Brain, the central intelligence of the Space Pirates.

Another unique aspect of Metroid is the reveal of Samus's gender at the end of the game, a significant surprise at the time, solidifying Samus Aran as one of the most iconic female protagonists in gaming history.
