The Magic of Scheherazade is a unique action-adventure RPG for the NES, drawing inspiration from the legendary Arabian Nights tales. Players assume the role of an amnesiac hero who awakens in a world threatened by the evil sorcerer Gal Agura. The main quest is to rescue Princess Scheherazade and the five kingdoms from his control.
The gameplay of The Magic of Scheherazade combines elements of top-down action-adventure games and turn-based battles. When navigating the overworld map or dungeon areas, the game functions like a top-down action game, similar to The Legend of Zelda. Players can attack enemies with their sword and utilize various spells.
The unique aspect lies in its combat system. Upon encountering certain enemies or entering specific battle zones, the game transitions into a turn-based combat mode. In these battles, players face one or more enemies, using commands such as physical attacks, spell casting, or item usage. The magic system is extensive, allowing players to learn and upgrade various spells for attack, defense, healing, or other supportive effects. Spells are categorized into different types, each associated with a companion character or a "Djinn" that players will encounter throughout their journey.
The game features a day/night cycle that influences events and NPCs. Players will journey through five distinct worlds, each with its own theme and enemies. Exploration is a key element, with many secrets, hidden items, and Djinn to discover. Djinn are powerful entities that can be summoned in battle to aid the player with potent spells. Collecting and upgrading Djinn is a crucial part of the game's progression.
Furthermore, the game includes puzzle-solving elements and interactions with NPCs to gather information and side quests. Players need to collect money to purchase better equipment and consumable items. The ultimate goal is to defeat Gal Agura and restore peace to the kingdom.
