Introduce
Mach Rider is a unique racing and shooting game released on the NES console in 1985. Players take on the role of Mach Rider, a lone motorcyclist in a post-apocalyptic world invaded by a monstrous race known as Quadrunners. The primary goal is to survive, eliminate enemies, and search for other survivors.
The game features two main modes: "Fighting Course" and "Endurance Course."
In Fighting Course mode, players must drive through a series of fixed stages, destroying obstructing Quadrunners and avoiding obstacles. Each stage has a "D Block" at the end, which the player needs to drive through to complete the level. If the bike is destroyed, the player loses one of three lives and restarts from the beginning of the stage or the nearest checkpoint.
The Endurance Course mode challenges players to drive a certain distance (e.g., 1000 km, 2000 km, 4000 km) with limited fuel. Players must collect fuel barrels along the way to continue their journey. This mode has no time limit but requires careful fuel management.
Both modes feature a pseudo-3D perspective, with the player viewing from behind the motorcycle. Players can move the bike left, right, accelerate, and decelerate. A distinctive feature of Mach Rider is the ability to fire. Players can shoot forward to destroy Quadrunners or obstacles. Additionally, Mach Rider's motorcycle can shift gears (from 1st to 4th) to adjust speed, a crucial element for dodging and attacking.
When Mach Rider's bike collides with enemies or obstacles, it is destroyed into fragments. However, if the player quickly presses the A and B buttons simultaneously, Mach Rider can reassemble the bike instantly, saving time and lives. This is a unique and helpful mechanic.
The graphics of Mach Rider, though simple by today's standards, were quite impressive at the time of its release, conveying a sense of speed and depth. The sound and background music also contribute to the tense and engaging atmosphere of the game. Mach Rider is considered one of the pioneering titles combining racing and shooting action on the NES.
