Players can choose from four unique characters: Thor (Warrior), Thyra (Valkyrie), Merlin (Wizard), and Questor (Elf). Each character possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses in terms of attack power, movement speed, and magic abilities. For instance, Thor excels in melee combat, while Merlin can unleash powerful fireballs.
The gameplay of Gauntlet (USA) NES focuses on continuous combat and resource management. Players will face countless types of monsters, including ghosts, goblins, sorcerers, and grunts. Monsters often emerge from "generators" that players must destroy to prevent them from respawning. Destroying these generators is key to controlling the number of enemies on screen.
During exploration, players will collect crucial items. Food is essential for maintaining health, as the character's health gradually depletes over time even when not under attack.
