Introduce

Elysion is an Action RPG developed by Data East, exclusively released in Japan for the NES in 1986. The game casts players as the protagonist, Frey (フレイ), a young warrior tasked with saving the world from the tyrannical rule of the evil demon lord Elysion.

The gameplay of Elysion combines elements of exploration, combat, and character progression. Players navigate a vast overhead (top-down) map, exploring towns, dungeons, and various other areas. In towns, you can interact with non-player characters (NPCs) to gather information, purchase items, and acquire new weapons and armor. Equipping stronger gear is crucial for dealing with increasingly dangerous foes.

Combat in Elysion unfolds in real-time. When Frey encounters an enemy on the map, he will automatically attack with his equipped weapon. Players need to skillfully maneuver Frey to dodge incoming attacks and position him to deal effective damage. There are various types of enemies, each with their own attack patterns and weaknesses. Defeating enemies grants experience points (EXP) and gold.

Accumulated experience points allow Frey to level up, enhancing his stats such as Strength, Defense, and Hit Points (HP). Leveling up is essential to confront tougher bosses and more challenging encounters. Gold is used to purchase equipment or restore health. Additionally, the game features special items or magic spells that Frey can find or learn throughout his journey, helping him overcome obstacles or deal greater damage in combat.

The ultimate goal is to locate and defeat the demon lord Elysion, who seeks to dominate the world. To do so, Frey must overcome numerous challenges, solve minor puzzles, and defeat sub-bosses guarding key areas. Elysion offers a classic action-RPG experience with a focus on continuous exploration and combat, serving as a prime example of the genre on the NES.
