Dragon Ball 3 - Gokuu Den is a role-playing game (RPG) developed for the NES console, based on Akira Toriyama's popular Dragon Ball manga and anime series. This is the third installment in the Dragon Ball series on Famicom, focusing on Son Goku's journey from childhood to adulthood, covering events from the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, the Red Ribbon Army, all the way to King Piccolo.
The gameplay primarily involves exploring the world from a top-down perspective, moving through various maps, talking to characters to gather information and advance the storyline. Players control Goku and sometimes other characters like Krillin or Bulma.
The combat system of Dragon Ball 3 - Gokuu Den is a distinctive feature. When encountering enemies, the game switches to a turn-based battle screen. Instead of choosing conventional commands, players select "Ki" Cards to perform actions. Each card has two stats: a large number at the top (usually from 1 to 7) representing attack or defense power, and a smaller number at the bottom (from 1 to 7) representing speed or evasion ability.
Players need to choose the appropriate card for the situation. For example, for a strong attack, select a card with a large top number. For defense or evasion, select a card with a large bottom number. This card selection is strategic, as the opponent also chooses a card, and the outcome of an an attack or defense depends on comparing the stats between your card and the opponent's card.
Goku can use special techniques like Kamehameha by expending Ki points, often requiring selecting the correct card type or card combination. These techniques are more powerful than regular attacks and can turn the tide of battle.
Goku will level up through battles, improving his strength, defense, and Ki stats. Players can also collect items to aid in their journey or enhance their power.
Besides combat, the game also requires players to solve simple puzzles, find hidden items, or complete side quests to unlock new areas or progress further in the storyline.
Dragon Ball 3 - Gokuu Den offers an authentic Dragon Ball RPG experience, with a storyline closely following the original work and a unique card-based combat system that requires players to employ certain strategies.
