Downtown Special - Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Da yo Zenin Shuugou! is a unique NES side-scrolling beat-'em-up that transports players to a vibrant feudal Japan. Unlike previous Kunio-kun titles that often took place in modern settings, this installment transforms Kunio and Riki into wandering ronin or samurai, embarking on a humorous adventure filled with intense battles.
The core gameplay retains the familiar action-oriented style of the series. Players will navigate through side-scrolling screens, confronting numerous enemies such as samurai, ninja, or Edo-period thugs. The combat system is straightforward yet effective, allowing players to perform punches, kicks, jumps, and execute characteristic combo moves. A distinctive feature is the ability to pick up and utilize environmental objects like sticks, swords, or even throw other enemies at their foes.
Beyond the action elements, Downtown Special - Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Da yo Zenin Shuugou! deeply integrates role-playing game (RPG) elements. After defeating enemies, players will earn money and experience. This money can be spent at shops within villages to purchase healing items, enhance character stats (such as strength, speed, defense), or, more importantly, learn new combat techniques. These techniques include special moves that give players an advantage in more challenging fights. Upgrading stats and learning new moves are key to overcoming progressively difficult challenges.
The game supports both single-player and two-player cooperative modes, with one player controlling Kunio and the other controlling Riki, enhancing the entertainment and strategic depth.
