Introduce

Contra (USA) on the NES is one of the most iconic and influential run-and-gun action games of all time. Players take on the role of either Bill Rizer or Lance Bean, two elite commandos tasked with stopping the alien Red Falcon army from invading Earth. The game is renowned for its fast-paced action, constant movement, and relentless enemy encounters.

The gameplay in Contra features a variety of level designs and perspectives. Most stages are side-scrolling or vertical-scrolling, where players must advance forward, dodge projectiles, and eliminate hordes of soldiers, tanks, and other enemy war machines. Additionally, there are unique pseudo-3D "base" stages, where players move into the screen, shooting at turrets and destroying core defenses.

A crucial element of Contra is its diverse weapon system. Players can collect flying power-up icons to upgrade their current weapon. Common weapon types include:

  • S (Spread Gun): Fires multiple projectiles in a wide arc, incredibly effective for clearing crowds. This is often the most sought-after weapon.
  • M (Machine Gun): Offers rapid-fire capabilities.
  • L (Laser Gun): Shoots a powerful beam of energy.
  • F (Flame Thrower): A short-range but high-damage flamethrower.
  • R (Rapid Fire): Increases the firing rate of the current weapon.
  • B (Barrier): Grants temporary invincibility.

Contra is famously difficult, demanding quick reflexes and memorization of enemy patterns. However, its accessibility was greatly enhanced by the "Konami Code" (Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start), which grants players 30 extra lives, making the challenging experience more enjoyable for casual players.

The two-player cooperative mode is another highlight of Contra, allowing two players to tackle the challenges together, creating memorable moments of teamwork and shared excitement. With its groundbreaking graphics for its time, iconic music, and addictive gameplay, Contra became a gaming legend and remains beloved by fans to this day.
