Caltron - 6 in 1 is an unlicensed multicart for the NES, notable not for its exceptional quality, but for the sheer variety and often the poor quality of the games contained within. This cartridge features six distinct titles, each offering a different style of gameplay:
The first game is Adam & Eve, a vertical scrolling shooter. Players control both Adam and Eve simultaneously, maneuvering them to avoid obstacles and shoot down enemies. The controls are straightforward, but the game lacks depth and significant challenge.
Next is Balloon Monster, a clone of other vertical scrolling shooters like Pop 'n TwinBee. In this game, players control a flying character and shoot at large balloons. The objective is to destroy all balloons to progress. Graphics and sound are quite rudimentary.
Cosmo Police is a horizontal scrolling shooter. Players pilot a spaceship, moving across the screen and shooting down enemy vessels. Like other games in this collection, Cosmo Police features repetitive gameplay and rather uninspired graphics.
Magic Carpet 1001 is often considered the "most playable" game in the collection. It is also a horizontal scrolling shooter, but with a slightly faster pace and somewhat more varied level design. Players fly a magic carpet and face different types of enemies.
Pea Shooters is another vertical scrolling shooter, where the player controls a small character firing "pea shots" at enemies. The game features simple graphics and basic gameplay, with not many unique elements to keep players engaged.
Finally, there's Quick Block, a puzzle game similar to Tetris or Columns, where players must arrange falling blocks to form lines or color groups to make them disappear. However, Quick Block suffers from poor controls and physics, leading to a less than smooth experience.
Overall, Caltron - 6 in 1 serves as a prime example of early NES unlicensed multicarts. While the overall quality is not high, it remains an interesting curiosity for those exploring the more obscure corners of gaming history.
