Introduce
Argus is a classic vertical-scrolling shooter game released for the NES in Japan. Players control a combat spaceship with the unique ability to transform into a tank. This transformation mechanic is the core highlight of the game, allowing players to flexibly switch between the two forms to deal with different types of enemies.
In spaceship form, players will fly through the air, shooting down enemy aircraft and avoiding obstacles. This is the primary form for movement and engaging most aerial threats. When transforming into a tank, the vessel lands on the ground, and players can control it to attack ground targets. Switching between these two forms is crucial for progressing through stages, as some enemies or obstacles can only be destroyed in a specific form.
Throughout the game, players can collect power-up items to upgrade their firepower and abilities. Common power-ups include Speed-Up to increase movement speed, Shot to enhance bullet power, and Option for additional support drones that fire alongside the main ship. Notably, there are also specific power-ups dedicated to ground attack capabilities when in tank form. Each stage features various waves of enemies and often culminates in a challenging boss battle, requiring players to master the transformation mechanic and utilize power-ups effectively to achieve victory.
