Introduce

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - Heroes of the Lance on the NES is an Action RPG based on the popular Dragonlance fantasy novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The game puts players in the shoes of Tanis Half-Elven, leading a party of eight legendary heroes of Krynn, including Caramon Majere, Raistlin Majere, Goldmoon, Riverwind, Sturm Brightblade, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, and Flint Fireforge. Their primary mission is to find and protect the Disks of Mishakal from the evil forces of the Dragon Queen Takhisis.

The gameplay of Heroes of the Lance is divided into two main parts: side-scrolling combat screens and character selection/management screens. In the combat sections, players control one of the eight heroes in real-time, moving through various environments such as forests, caves, and towns. Each character possesses distinct combat abilities: fighters use swords and spears, magic-users cast spells, clerics use healing and offensive spells, and rogues have special skills. Players can switch between characters at any time to leverage their strengths.

The combat system requires quick reactions and strategic thinking. Enemies appear constantly and attack from multiple directions. Although there are many characters, only one is directly controlled, while the others automatically attack or defend. Resource management, such as health potions and magic energy, is crucial, as they are limited. The game also features exploration, with secrets and hidden items within levels. However, Heroes of the Lance is known for its high difficulty, demanding patience and good strategy from players to overcome its challenges.
