WWF King of the Ring for the Game Boy system (GBC compatible) delivers a classic one-on-one wrestling experience, focusing on fast-paced and intuitive action. Players take control of one of the top WWF superstars of the era, including legendary names like Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Yokozuna, Razor Ramon, and Lex Luger.

The gameplay in WWF King of the Ring is relatively simple but requires timing and strategy. Players use the D-pad to move their wrestler around the ring. The A and B buttons are used to perform offensive and defensive actions. Specifically, you can unleash basic strikes like punches and kicks. When close to an opponent, you can initiate a grapple by getting close and pressing a button. After grappling, depending on the direction and button pressed, you can perform various moves such as slams, throws, or submission holds.

Each wrestler has a health or stamina bar. As they take damage, this bar gradually depletes. When an opponent is significantly weakened, players can perform their wrestler's unique finishing move, or go for a pinfall to win the match by holding the opponent down for a referee's three-count. Additionally, utilizing environmental elements like the ropes for Irish whips or performing high-flying attacks from the turnbuckle are also part of the strategy.

The game features two main modes: "Exhibition" allows players to select a wrestler and play a single match. The "King of the Ring Tournament" mode is where players participate in a single-elimination tournament, winning each round to claim the prestigious King of the Ring title. Although the graphics are simple 8-bit, the game still captures the personality of each wrestler through their distinct sprites and movements. Audio includes impact sound effects, crowd cheers, and memorable background music that evokes the vibrant wrestling atmosphere.
