Players control one of several professional skateboarders or create their own custom character. Each level is a uniquely designed skatepark filled with various obstacles, rails, and ramps for executing tricks. The primary objective in Career Mode is to complete a set of goals within a time limit, typically 2 minutes. These goals include achieving specific score targets, collecting S-K-A-T-E letters, finding hidden items, performing specific tricks at designated spots, or achieving high-scoring combos.

The control scheme is adapted for the GBC, allowing players to perform fundamental moves like Ollies, Grinds, Kickflips, Heelflips, and Grabs. The key to achieving high scores lies in the ability to link tricks together into combos. For example, you can Ollie onto a rail for a Grind, then use a Manual to connect to another trick, or use a Revert upon landing from an aerial trick to maintain the combo. Each trick has its own point value, and when chained together, the score multiplies.

As players complete objectives, they earn cash to upgrade their skater's stats such as speed, air, balance, or purchase new decks and gear. These upgrades are crucial for unlocking more challenging levels and trials. The game also features a Free Skate mode for practice and exploring level secrets without time constraints.
