In Soccer Manager (Europe) for Game Boy Color, players assume the role of a football club manager. The primary objective is to lead your club to success, winning championships and gaining promotion through various leagues.

Gameplay focuses on extensive management aspects. You will have full control over your squad, including buying and selling players in the transfer market. Scouting for young talents or experienced players to add to your team is key. Conversely, you may also need to sell players who don't fit or to balance the club's finances.

Another crucial element is setting up tactics and formations. Before each match, you can choose a tactical scheme (e.g., 4-4-2, 3-5-2), assign positions to individual players, and adjust tactical instructions like defensive or attacking approaches. These decisions will directly influence the match outcome.

Player training is also an indispensable part. You can train specific skills for your players to improve their fitness, technique, or morale. Financial management is equally vital; you need to ensure the club doesn't go bankrupt by balancing income from ticket sales, prize money, and expenses like player wages and operational costs.

Matches will be simulated automatically. Players do not directly control the footballers but will observe the results based on the tactical decisions and squad quality they have set. At the end of the season, the team will be ranked based on its performance, and if good enough, will have the opportunity to be promoted to a higher league or participate in continental cups.
