Introduce
In Q-bert (GBC), players control the titular character, Q-bert, a round, orange creature with a long nose, as he hops across a pyramid-shaped structure made of cubes. The primary objective of each level is to change the color of all the cubes on the pyramid by landing on them. Each time Q-bert hops onto a cube, its color changes. It might require multiple hops on the same cube to achieve the final required color.
Gameplay is presented from an isometric perspective. Q-bert can only move diagonally from one cube to another. Players must be wary of enemies that appear from the top of the pyramid and move downwards. The most prominent enemy is Coily, a purple snake. When Coily hops onto the bottom cube, it transforms into a larger snake and begins to chase Q-bert. Other enemies include Ugg and Wrong Way, who move diagonally from bottom to top, and Slick and Sam, who will revert the colors of cubes Q-bert has already changed.
To assist Q-bert, there are several special items: Green flying discs on either side of the pyramid. If Q-bert hops onto a disc while an enemy is in pursuit, the disc will fly to the top, causing the enemy to fall off and be removed from the level. Green balls: When touched, all enemies on screen are temporarily frozen, giving Q-bert time to complete his objective. Purple balls: These are dangerous. If Q-bert touches them, the player loses a life.
Each time Q-bert is touched by an enemy or falls off the pyramid, the player loses a life. Completing a level advances Q-bert to the next, with increasing difficulty, often featuring more cubes, more complex color patterns, or faster-spawning enemies. The GBC version of Q-bert retains the core gameplay of the original arcade classic, offering a classic action-puzzle experience on the handheld platform.
