In Prince of Persia (GB/GBC), players assume the role of a Prince imprisoned in a dungeon, tasked with navigating through numerous traps and guards to rescue the Princess before the 60-minute (or 120-minute, depending on the version) time limit expires. The gameplay of Prince of Persia is renowned for its fluid movement mechanics, created using rotoscoping animation, which gives the character incredibly realistic actions such as walking, running, jumping, climbing, and grabbing ledges.
Each level is a labyrinth filled with spikes, pressure plates, falling floors, and enemy guards. Players must utilize their agility and logical thinking to overcome obstacles, locate hidden switches to open doors or activate other mechanisms. The sword combat system is simple yet effective, allowing players to draw their sword and engage in one-on-one duels with guards. Timing attacks and blocks is crucial for victory.
The Prince's health is represented by a health bar. Players can find potions to restore health or even increase their maximum health capacity. However, some potions have negative effects, requiring careful consideration. The time limit is the most significant pressure, forcing players to move quickly but also to meticulously plan each step to avoid mistakes. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions retain the core spirit of the original, delivering a challenging and engaging classic platformer experience.
