Pokemon Card GB is a digital collectible card game developed for the Game Boy Color, based on the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. In the game, players assume the role of a young protagonist (Mark in the Japanese version, Ronald in the English version), whose ultimate goal is to become the Pokémon Card Game champion. To achieve this, players must travel through various card clubs, challenging and defeating Club Masters to earn medals.
The core gameplay revolves around collecting cards, building decks, and engaging in card battles. Players can acquire new cards by winning battles, receiving booster packs, or utilizing the unique "Card Pop!" feature (which allows players to receive random cards when connecting with another Game Boy console running the same game, though this feature is less accessible in emulation).
Each deck must consist of 60 cards, including Pokémon cards (basic and evolved), Energy Cards, and Trainer Cards. Building a balanced and strategic deck is crucial. Players need to consider Pokémon types, weaknesses, resistances, attack energy costs, and the effects of various Trainer Cards to create effective strategies.
Battles are turn-based. Each player starts with an Active Pokémon and up to five Benched Pokémon. Six Prize Cards are placed face down. The objective of a battle is to knock out all of the opponent's Pokémon, or claim all six Prize Cards, or if the opponent runs out of cards to draw from their deck.
During a player's turn, they can perform several actions: draw a card, attach an Energy card to a Pokémon, play Trainer cards, evolve Pokémon, or retreat their Active Pokémon. After performing these actions, the player will choose an attack from their Active Pokémon to deal damage to the opponent's Pokémon.
Once players defeat all the Club Masters, they become eligible to challenge the Grand Masters, the strongest players in the world of Pokemon Card GB. Defeating them will earn the player the title of Pokémon Card Game Champion.
