In the game Paperboy 2 for the Game Boy (GB) and Game Boy Color (GBC) systems, players take on the role of a paperboy. The main objective is to control the boy as he cycles through busy streets, throwing newspapers accurately to the doorsteps of subscribing customers.
The game features an isometric perspective, allowing players to see the road ahead and anticipate potential obstacles. The path is not always straightforward; it can include turns, inclines, declines, and many unexpected hazards. To succeed, players need quick reflexes and precise aiming.
Each delivery day presents a new challenge. Players must avoid numerous obstacles on the road, including: various types of traffic like cars, motorcycles, trucks; animals such as dogs and cats, and even pedestrians or children playing. Additionally, there are dangerous static objects like puddles, grates, trees, and even active lawnmowers. Colliding with any obstacle can cause the paperboy to crash, resulting in the loss of a life or a newspaper.
Newspaper delivery requires precision. Players must throw papers into the correct mailboxes or onto the doorsteps of registered subscribers. These houses are usually clearly marked. Missing a throw or throwing a paper at a non-subscriber's house will result in a loss of points. Sometimes, breaking windows of non-subscriber houses can even yield bonus points, but the primary goal remains to deliver papers on time and to the correct addresses.
Players have a limited number of newspapers and a certain number of lives. When all papers are gone or all lives are lost, the game ends. The score is calculated based on the number of successful deliveries, obstacles avoided, and optional "destructive" actions. Paperboy 2 is a simple yet addictive game, demanding focus and dexterity to complete each delivery day perfectly.
