Introduce
Mr. Driller is a unique puzzle game where players control Susumu Hori, a professional driller, with the goal of digging as deep as possible underground. The core mechanic revolves around destroying colored blocks. When Susumu drills through a block, it disappears. Blocks above will fall to fill the void.
A key feature is that blocks of the same color that are touching will automatically disappear, creating interesting and sometimes dangerous chain reactions. Players need to carefully plan to create large chains, clear paths, or avoid getting trapped. The main objective is to reach a certain depth in each stage. However, Susumu has a limited oxygen supply. Oxygen decreases over time and when drilling through hard blocks (X-blocks). To replenish oxygen, players must collect air capsules scattered throughout the underground.
Another major hazard is falling blocks. If a block falls from above and crushes Susumu, the game ends. This requires players to be quick and strategic in their drilling, not creating large empty spaces above them without an escape route. The game features various modes, including the standard deep drilling mode and a time attack mode. The Game Boy Color version retains the addictive core gameplay, with graphics and sound optimized for the handheld system. Players must balance drilling speed, collecting air, and avoiding being crushed by blocks. The combination of puzzle and fast-paced action creates the appeal of Mr. Driller.
