Introduce
In Lemmings, players are tasked with saving hordes of small, clueless, yet endearing creatures known as Lemmings. These Lemmings continuously walk forward, oblivious to danger, and it's up to the player to guide them safely from an entrance to an exit in each level. The game is a blend of puzzle-solving and strategy, requiring quick thinking and careful planning.
Each level presents a unique environment filled with hazardous obstacles such as steep cliffs, pits, deadly traps, lava, and water. Players do not directly control the Lemmings but instead assign them specific skills. These skills include: climbers to scale walls; floaters to survive long falls; blockers to stop other Lemmings from walking into danger or to redirect them; diggers to tunnel straight down; miners to tunnel diagonally; builders to construct bridges across gaps; and bombers to detonate, clearing a path or sacrificing one Lemming to save others.
The challenge lies in judiciously using these skills, as each skill is available in limited quantities per level. Players must time and place their skill assignments precisely, ensuring a sufficient number of Lemmings (a specific percentage) are saved before the time limit expires. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions of Lemmings were optimized for the smaller screen and simpler controls, delivering the addictive puzzle experience on the go.
