Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a side-scrolling platformer where players control the titular character Kirby. The main objective of the game is to collect the seven Rainbow Drops to defeat Dark Matter and restore the rainbow to Dream Land.

Kirby possesses the signature ability to inhale enemies and swallow them to copy their special powers. There are various copy abilities available, such as Spark (electric shock), Cutter (throwing a boomerang), Stone (turning into an invincible rock), Needle (projecting spikes), Ice (freezing enemies), Burning (turning into a fireball), and Parasol (gliding and attacking).

A unique feature of Kirby's Dream Land 2 is the introduction of Kirby's three animal friends: Rick the Hamster, Kine the Ocean Sunfish, and Coo the Owl. Each friend grants Kirby unique abilities when he rides on them. Rick allows Kirby to move faster on land and prevents slipping on ice. Kine specializes in underwater movement, allowing Kirby to swim faster and inhale enemies more easily underwater. Coo is the airborne friend, helping Kirby fly freely through levels. Kirby's abilities also change when combined with each friend, creating diverse attack effects and strategies.

The game consists of several worlds, each featuring multiple stages and a boss. To collect all the Rainbow Drops, players must find hidden doors and complete specific challenges within each stage. Missing a drop will lead to fighting an alternate final boss and not seeing the true ending of the game.
