In the game ET - The Extra-Terrestrial - Escape from Planet Earth for the GBC system, players assume the role of E.T. - the friendly alien stranded on Earth. Your primary mission is to help E.T. find his way back to his home planet before he is captured by the government.

The gameplay is primarily adventure and puzzle-solving. E.T. needs to collect pieces of a communication device to call his spaceship. These pieces are hidden in various locations such as the forest, town, and a secret laboratory. Players will have to explore these areas, interact with the environment, and solve puzzles to find them.

E.T. possesses several unique special abilities that aid him on his journey. He can use telekinesis to move objects or activate switches. The healing ability allows E.T. to revive plants or restore his own health. Reese's Pieces candy can be collected to restore energy and health.
