In Driver - You are the Wheelman for GBC, players assume the role of Tanner, an undercover police officer tasked with infiltrating the criminal underworld by becoming their trusted getaway driver. Unlike its console counterparts, the GBC version features a top-down perspective, offering a unique driving experience adapted for the handheld screen.
Gameplay revolves around completing a variety of driving missions assigned by various crime bosses. These missions range from picking up and dropping off passengers, chasing targets, tailing vehicles, destroying property, to intense high-speed police pursuits. The driving mechanics are relatively straightforward, focusing on quick reflexes and precise control to navigate through traffic, avoid obstacles, and especially evade the relentless police force.
Collisions will damage your vehicle, and if your car takes too much damage or you get busted by the police, the mission will fail. Players will progress through different cities, unlocking new areas and missions as they advance through the storyline.
Beyond the main story mode, the game also includes a 'Take a Ride' mode, allowing players to freely explore cities without mission pressure, along with various 'Driving Games' designed to hone specific skills like parking, 180-degree turns, and more. These are crucial for familiarizing players with the controls before tackling tougher assignments.
