In Densha de Go! for Game Boy Color, players take on the role of a professional train engineer, navigating various Japanese railway lines. The primary objective of the game is to drive the train precisely, strictly adhering to railway traffic rules, including speed limits, signal lights, and most importantly, stopping the train at the exact designated position at each station.

The gameplay emphasizes meticulousness and reflexes. Players need to operate the throttle lever to accelerate and the brake lever to decelerate. The challenge comes from maintaining appropriate speeds, avoiding exceeding limits or going too slow, while also ensuring on-time arrival at each stop. Another crucial element is braking skill: you must calculate precisely to stop the train so that the train car doors align perfectly with the stopping mark on the platform. Stopping too far, too close, or overshooting the mark will result in point deductions.

A continuous scoring system of rewards and penalties is applied. Players earn points for adhering to rules and executing precise maneuvers, especially for perfect station stops. Conversely, speeding violations, late arrivals, or incorrect stopping positions will lead to significant point deductions. The game features various routes, each with its own difficulty and characteristics, requiring players to adapt and become familiar with the terrain, slopes, and curves. Despite being a GBC version with simple 2D graphics, Densha de Go! still delivers an authentic and challenging train driving experience, demanding high concentration and proficient control skills from the player to achieve the highest scores.
