In Cool Spot (GB), players take on the role of Cool Spot, the lively red dot mascot of the 7 Up brand. The main objective of the game is to collect a certain number of small red "spots" scattered throughout each level to qualify for rescuing a friend trapped in a cage. Each level requires a specific number of spots to be collected before the door leading to the friend's cage is unlocked.

The game features a traditional side-scrolling structure with platforming and light puzzle elements. Players must navigate Cool Spot through various diverse environments, from beaches and pirate ships to laboratories and other hazardous areas. Levels are designed with numerous obstacles like spikes, pitfalls, and especially a multitude of different enemies.

Cool Spot has the ability to jump and shoot his own "spots" as a weapon. This weapon can be upgraded by collecting special icons, enhancing its power or range. Besides the main red spots, players can also collect other items such as 7 Up soda bottles for health replenishment, or large 7 Up icons for extra lives.
