Introduce
In Centipede for Game Boy Color, players control a "Bug Blaster" at the bottom of the screen. The primary objective is to shoot down a multi-segmented centipede as it descends from the top. When a segment of the centipede is hit, it transforms into a mushroom. If the centipede is split, each half becomes a new, independent centipede, continuing its descent and adding to the challenge.
The playfield is filled with mushrooms, which act as obstacles and can be destroyed by the player's shots or consumed by spiders. Besides the centipede, players must contend with various other insects: spiders move erratically and are quite dangerous, also eating mushrooms; fleas drop rapidly, leaving mushrooms in their wake; and scorpions can poison mushrooms (turning them purple), causing the centipede to dive straight down that column upon contact.
The player's movement area is quite restricted, typically limited to a horizontal strip at the bottom of the screen, sometimes with a small vertical range. The ultimate goal is to achieve the highest score possible by destroying as many enemies as you can and surviving increasingly fast and difficult waves. The GBC version of Centipede successfully recreates the classic arcade shooting experience, delivering addictive and challenging gameplay on a handheld device.
