In Castlevania Legends, players assume the role of Sonia Belmont, one of the earliest vampire hunters of the Belmont lineage. Her primary mission is to defeat Dracula and prevent him from plunging the world into darkness. The game is a classic action-platformer, focusing on linear progression through distinct stages, rather than the open-ended exploration structure found in later installments.

Core gameplay revolves around using Sonia's ancestral whip to attack enemies. Players can control Sonia to move, jump, and attack in various directions. In addition to her whip, Sonia can collect and utilize iconic Castlevania sub-weapons such as the axe, holy water, dagger, and crystal tear. Each sub-weapon has limited ammunition and requires hearts to use, offering tactical advantages in different situations.

The stages in Castlevania Legends are designed with numerous obstacles, diverse enemies, and platforming sections that demand precision. Players must navigate traps, dodge monster attacks, and find their way to the end of each stage to confront a boss. Boss battles typically require players to learn the boss's attack patterns and exploit their weaknesses to achieve victory.

A unique feature in Castlevania Legends is "Burning Mode." When activated, Sonia temporarily becomes invincible and deals greater damage, helping players overcome difficult situations or deal with large groups of enemies. This mode has a limited duration and should be used strategically.
