Introduce
Cannon Fodder (GBC) puts players in command of a small squad of soldiers, typically starting with a few recruits, through a series of top-down combat missions.
Each mission requires players to maneuver their squad, gun down enemies, and complete specific objectives such as destroying enemy bases, rescuing hostages, or eliminating all opponents. You'll use the GBC controls to move your squad and aim. Soldiers will automatically fire at the nearest target when you issue an attack command.
Beyond standard rifles, your squad can pick up limited quantities of grenades and rockets. Grenades are effective for clearing groups of enemies or destroying light structures, while rockets are crucial for taking down tanks or heavily fortified bunkers.
A defining feature of Cannon Fodder is the permadeath of your soldiers. When a soldier falls, they are permanently gone and buried in a dedicated graveyard. However, new recruits will continuously arrive to replenish your ranks, allowing the war to continue. This creates a sense of attachment and sometimes regret for fallen soldiers, while simultaneously underscoring the futility of war.
The game environments are varied, featuring numerous obstacles and hazards like landmines, automated turrets, and different terrains. Players need to employ clever tactics to navigate, avoid traps, and utilize the environment to their advantage.
Combining fast-paced action, tactical elements, and a touch of dark humor, Cannon Fodder offers a unique and addictive experience, even on the GBC platform with its more simplified graphics compared to the original PC/Amiga versions.
