M.U.L.E. is a groundbreaking economic strategy game where players assume the roles of colonists on the newly discovered planet Irata. The primary objective is to become the wealthiest colonist by efficiently exploiting resources and managing the market.

The game unfolds in turns, with each turn representing a year on Irata. Each turn comprises several crucial phases:

1. Land Grant/Auction Phase: Players begin by selecting or bidding for plots of land. Each plot has varying production potential for different types of resources.

2. Development Phase (M.U.L.E. Deployment): This is the core of the game. Players purchase and equip M.U.L.E. (Multiple Use Labor Element) units to extract resources from their land plots. There are four main types of resources:

  • Food: Essential for sustaining colonists and M.U.L.E. operations.
  • Energy: Required to power M.U.L.E.s and production facilities.
  • Smithore: Used to manufacture new M.U.L.E. units.
  • Crystite: A rare, highly valuable, but also risky resource to mine.

Choosing the right type of M.U.L.E. for a specific land type and market demand is crucial.

3. Production Phase: After M.U.L.E.s are deployed, resources are produced based on land quality and the number of active M.U.L.E.s.

4. Market Phase (Auction/Store): Players can buy and sell resources in the communal market. Prices fluctuate based on supply and demand. This is where your negotiation skills and market foresight are put to the test. You can sell surplus resources you've produced or purchase what you are lacking.

5. Random Events: Throughout the game, random events (good or bad) can occur, affecting all or some players, adding an element of unpredictability.

M.U.L.E. supports up to four players, who can be human or computer-controlled. The game concludes after a set number of years, and the player with the largest net worth (cash plus the value of resources and land) wins. The combination of resource management, market strategy, and an element of chance has contributed to M.U.L.E.'s timeless appeal.
