In Deja Vu (USA) on NES, players take on the role of Theodore "Ace" Harding, a former boxer who wakes up in a strange office with a dead body and a gun, suffering from complete amnesia. The primary goal of the game is to discover one's identity, figure out what happened, and prove one's innocence before it's too late. The game is a point-and-click adventure where players interact with the environment through a command menu system.

The interface of Deja Vu is divided into several windows: a view window displaying the scene, a command window containing action verbs (like Look, Take, Use, Open, Close, Hit, Speak, Go), an inventory window showing items the player possesses, and a message window. Players will click on objects on the screen or select commands from the menu to perform actions. For example, you can click on a door and select "Go" to move to another area, or click on a book and select "Look" to read information.

A crucial element in Deja Vu is the collection and use of evidence and items. Players will need to thoroughly search each room, looking for hidden clues, from keys, guns, to documents and drugs. These items often need to be combined or used correctly to solve puzzles and unlock new areas. Talking to other characters is also very important, as they can provide valuable information or hints to progress further in the storyline.

The biggest challenge in Deja Vu is the time element. Ace has been injected with a drug that causes his amnesia and will die if he doesn't find an antidote in time. This creates constant pressure, forcing players to think quickly and act efficiently. Ace's amnesia is also depicted through gradual flashbacks that reveal themselves as players gather enough information. To complete the game, players must not only solve the murder mystery but also restore Ace's memory and uncover the true mastermind.
