In Yoshi's Cookie, the player's objective is to clear the screen of various types of cookies. The playfield is presented as a grid filled with different cookie shapes like hearts, flowers, mushrooms, shells, and stars. Players control a cursor to select and swap entire rows or columns of cookies. Unlike many puzzle games that only allow swapping adjacent tiles, Yoshi's Cookie lets you shift an entire row or column until it connects with another row or column.
When a complete row or column of identical cookies is formed, they disappear from the screen. For example, if you create a horizontal or vertical line of five mushroom-shaped cookies, they will vanish. There's a special Yoshi-shaped cookie. This acts as a 'wildcard' cookie that can combine with any other cookie type to form a complete row or column, making it easier to create combos and score points.
The game features multiple play modes. A-Type is an endless mode where players aim for the highest score as the screen gradually fills with cookies. B-Type is a level-based mode where you must clear a certain number of cookies to advance. Additionally, there's a Versus mode for two players, allowing you to compete against a friend or the computer to see who is faster and more strategic. Familiar characters like Mario and Yoshi appear to cheer on the player throughout the game.
