Introduce

Xiao Ma Li is a classic 2D platformer for the NES, widely known as an unofficial (bootleg) version of Super Mario Bros. Players control the main character, a Mario-like figure, navigating through challenging levels.

Gameplay revolves around running, jumping over obstacles, and avoiding or defeating enemies. Familiar foes like Goombas and Koopa Troopas appear, defeatable by jumping on their heads or using power-ups. The game features power-ups such as mushrooms to grow larger, or fire flowers to shoot fireballs.

Each level has a linear structure, with the goal being to reach the flagpole at the end. Players can break brick blocks or discover hidden blocks containing coins or items. Green pipes often lead to secret areas or shortcuts. At the end of each world, players confront a version of Bowser, usually requiring precise jumps or fire power to defeat.

What sets Xiao Ma Li apart from the official Super Mario Bros. is its unofficial nature, leading to unique level designs, unexpected enemy placements, and sometimes quirky physics or glitches. Jumps might feel slightly off, or enemy patterns might be less predictable. This provides a familiar platforming experience but with a distinct, often surprising, twist that challenges players in new ways due to its bootleg characteristics.
