Tecmo Bowl is an iconic American football game for the NES, renowned for its blend of simple yet deep gameplay. The primary objective is to score more points than the opponent by achieving touchdowns or field goals.

On offense, players choose one of four available plays. These plays include both run plays and pass plays. For pass plays, the player controls the quarterback and can choose to throw the ball to one of two receivers running their routes. Tecmo Bowl's passing system is intuitive, allowing players to throw early or wait for the receiver to get into position. Once a player catches the ball, the player controls that ball carrier to run towards the end zone, attempting to evade opposing defenders.

Run plays are also straightforward yet effective. Players control the running back and attempt to break through the opposing defense. A unique aspect of Tecmo Bowl is the ability for star players to suddenly accelerate, creating spectacular breakaway runs. On defense, players select one of four defensive formations. After choosing a formation, the player controls a single defensive player to try and stop the offense. You can switch between defensive players to control the one closest to the ball. The goal is to tackle the ball carrier or intercept a pass.

The game also incorporates basic football rules such as four downs to gain ten yards, fumbles, interceptions, and field goal attempts. Games are fast-paced and intense, with every play having the potential to change the game's momentum. While the graphics are simple, the player animations are smooth and easily recognizable.
