In Star Luster, players assume the role of a pilot commanding an advanced starship, with the primary mission of defending the galaxy from alien invasion. A key feature of the game is its pioneering use of 3D wireframe graphics for its time, creating a sense of depth and vast space. The screen is divided into two main sections: the upper part displays a first-person cockpit view of the 3D space, where targets and asteroids appear; the lower part is a crucial tactical radar map, essential for locating enemies and important points within the star system.
Players must navigate through various star systems, each containing multiple planets and enemy bases. The objective is to locate and destroy enemy bases while engaging countless alien warships. Resource management, particularly fuel and missiles, is critical. Fuel is consumed when moving between sectors or when boosting speed. Missiles are powerful weapons but are limited in supply. Players need to return to allied bases or supply stations to refuel and rearm their missiles.
The radar system allows players to see the positions of enemies, bases, and supply points. Understanding and utilizing the radar is key to strategic planning and survival. Enemies come in various types with different attack patterns and defenses. Star Luster demands a combination of piloting skills, spatial awareness, and tactical thinking to complete increasingly challenging missions.
