Introduce

Solitaire (USA) (Unl) for the NES is an adaptation of the classic Klondike Solitaire card game. The primary objective of the game is to move all cards from the tableau piles and the stock pile to the four foundation piles, building them up in ascending order from Ace to King, by suit.

At the start, the game deals 7 tableau piles. The first pile has one face-up card, the second has two cards (one face-up, one face-down), and so on, up to the seventh pile with seven cards (one face-up, six face-down). The remaining cards form the stock pile, ready to be dealt.

Basic gameplay revolves around moving cards:

  • Moving on the Tableau: You can move cards between tableau piles. The rule is that you can only place a card on a card that is one rank higher and of an alternating color (e.g., a 8 of hearts can be placed on a 9 of spades or 9 of clubs). You can also move entire sequences of already-ordered cards.
  • Moving to the Foundation: The four foundation piles are where you will build sequences of cards from Ace (A) to King (K) by suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades). The Ace is the first card to be placed on a foundation pile.
  • Drawing from the Stock: When no more moves are available on the tableau, you can draw cards from the stock pile. Typically, the game allows you to draw either one or three cards at a time, revealing the top card of the discard pile. This card can then be used to move to a tableau pile or a foundation pile.
  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: If a tableau pile becomes empty, you can only place a King (K) in that position.

The interface of Solitaire (USA) (Unl) on the NES is quite simple, utilizing the basic controls of the NES controller. You will use the D-pad to move the cursor and the A or B button to select and place cards. Although it's an unofficial version, the game still offers a familiar Klondike Solitaire experience, suitable for those looking to relax with a classic card game on an 8-bit console.
