Snow Bros NES is a classic arcade platformer where players control one of two snowman brothers – Nick or Tom – on a quest to rescue kidnapped princesses from King Artich. The primary objective in each stage is to eliminate all monsters present on the screen.
The gameplay of Snow Bros NES is deceptively simple yet highly addictive. Players can throw snow at enemies to cover them. Once an enemy is fully covered in snow, it transforms into a snowball. Players can then push this snowball. When a snowball is pushed, it rolls down, destroying any enemies in its path. This is a crucial mechanic for achieving high scores and clearing the screen efficiently.
Throughout the game, enemies can shoot projectiles or move in various patterns, requiring players to strategically dodge and counter-attack. Each stage is a single-screen affair, with no scrolling, focusing on clearing the current set of enemies.
The game offers various power-up items to assist the player. These items drop from defeated enemies or from special blocks. For instance, a red potion increases the snowman's movement speed, a blue potion enhances snow power and throw range, and a yellow potion increases the snow's throwing distance. Additionally, a green potion grants temporary invincibility. Coins and other score-boosting items like sushi also appear.
A unique feature of Snow Bros NES is that if players turn all enemies on screen into snowballs without pushing them, and then push one snowball to trigger a chain reaction that destroys all of them, a large bonus money item will appear. This encourages players to plan and execute combo chains for maximum scores.
The game consists of 50 stages in total, divided into 10 worlds, with each world containing 5 stages. At the end of each world, players will face a boss with unique attack patterns and weaknesses, requiring different tactics to defeat.
The charming pixel graphics and catchy tunes of Snow Bros NES have contributed to its timeless appeal, making it one of the beloved classic arcade titles on the NES system.
