Introduce

Silent Service is a World War II submarine simulation game released for the NES console. Players assume the role of a captain of a United States Navy submarine, operating in the Pacific Ocean against the Japanese fleet. The primary mission is to hunt down and sink enemy transport ships, warships, and naval convoys.

The game features multiple screens for managing your submarine. The Bridge screen allows you to observe the surface, control speed, and direction, as well as spot enemy ships from a distance. The Map screen displays your submarine's position, detected enemy ships, and patrol zones, which is crucial for planning movements and attacks.

Once a target is spotted, players switch to the Torpedo Control or Attack Periscope screen to aim and fire torpedoes. This requires you to precisely calculate the distance, target speed, and firing angle to ensure your torpedoes hit their mark. The Dive Panel screen allows you to adjust the submarine's depth, diving deep to avoid detection or surfacing to use the periscope.

The Damage Control screen helps you manage your submarine's systems and repair them when damaged by depth charges or shelling. Stealth is key in Silent Service; you must move carefully, using sonar and periscope to detect enemies without being exposed. When detected by enemy destroyers, they will drop depth charges, forcing you to dive deep, change course, and use evasive maneuvers to survive. Players also need to manage limited resources such as fuel and torpedo count.
