SD Sengoku Bushou Retsuden is a turn-based strategy game released for the NES. Set during Japan's tumultuous Sengoku (Warring States) period, players assume the role of a Daimyo (feudal lord) with the ultimate goal of unifying the entire country.
The core gameplay of SD Sengoku Bushou Retsuden focuses on resource management, territorial development, and warfare. Each turn, players issue commands to their armies and commanders. Key activities include: recruiting and training famous Bushou (military commanders) from history, each possessing unique stats and abilities; managing rice and gold to sustain your forces and develop your economy; and upgrading castles and lands to boost production and defensive capabilities.
When encountering enemies, players engage in battles. These skirmishes typically occur on a grid-based map or simple combat screen, where you direct your troops to move and attack. Tactics play a crucial role in troop placement, target selection, and utilizing commanders' special abilities. The "Super Deformed" (SD) art style presents historical figures in a charming, cute manner while retaining their distinctive features, giving this strategy game a unique appeal.
