In Rygar, players control the mighty warrior Rygar on his quest to save the world of Argus from the evil forces of Lord Ligar. The game blends action, adventure, and platforming elements, offering a unique experience on the NES console.

Rygar's primary weapon is the Diskarmor, a shield-like device that can be extended and retracted, functioning as a ranged projectile. Players can upgrade the Diskarmor to increase its power and range, allowing Rygar to deal with monsters more effectively.

The world in Rygar is designed in a semi-open fashion, allowing players to explore various areas on a world map. The gameplay features two main perspectives: side-scrolling when traversing specific areas like caves or castles, and an overhead (top-down) view when moving across the world map or in certain special zones. This transition between perspectives adds variety to the gameplay.

Players will face countless enemies, including mythical creatures and challenging bosses. To progress, Rygar must collect power-ups and items. Important items include the "Cross," which boosts the Diskarmor's power; the "Tiger," granting temporary invincibility; the "Grapple Hook," allowing Rygar to swing onto high ledges; and various health potions for recovery.

The ultimate goal is to defeat Ligar. The game requires players to use the Diskarmor strategically, while also thoroughly exploring to find secret passages and hidden items. Boss battles often demand players discover weaknesses and apply suitable tactics. Rygar is renowned for its high difficulty, providing a significant challenge for gamers.
