In RoadBlasters for the NES, players assume the role of a skilled driver controlling a heavily armed combat vehicle. The primary objective is to navigate through perilous highways, destroy enemy vehicles, and collect "Orbs" – green energy spheres that replenish your car's fuel supply.
Each level is referred to as a "Zone." Your vehicle has a constantly depleting fuel gauge. If the fuel runs out, the game ends. To survive, players must continuously collect Orbs from destroyed enemy cars or fuel canisters scattered along the road. Shooting down enemy vehicles not only earns you points but is also the main way to ensure a steady supply of fuel.
Your car is equipped with a standard machine gun with unlimited ammunition. Additionally, throughout the game, you can pick up temporary weapon upgrades such as Cruise Missile which allows you to fire more powerful missiles, or Nitro for a sudden burst of speed, helping you overcome obstacles or evade enemies. There's also a Shield that protects your car from damage for a short period. These upgrades typically appear as icons on the road or after destroying certain types of enemy vehicles.
Enemies in RoadBlasters are diverse, ranging from simple small cars to armored vehicles, bomb-laden trucks, and even helicopters or tanks. They will attempt to ram your car or shoot back. Players must have quick reflexes to both dodge and shoot them down.
The game features a total of 50 Zones. After every few Zones, players will encounter a "Checkpoint" where you can receive bonus points and prepare for the subsequent Zones. The difficulty progressively increases with each Zone, introducing more enemies, more complex terrain, and faster speeds. The game's graphics adopt an arcade style, with speed effects rendered quite well on the NES platform.
RoadBlasters demands a combination of driving skill, quick reflexes, and resource (fuel) management. It is a high-speed action game that offers a challenging and addictive experience for those who enjoy the driving and shooting genre.
