Rampart is a unique blend of strategic building and action-packed shooting, released for the NES by Jaleco. The game takes place on a top-down map where players must defend their castles from enemy attacks.

Each round in Rampart is divided into three main phases:

1. Build Phase: This is the first and highly strategic phase. Players are given a random assortment of wall pieces and must quickly use them to build or repair walls around one or more of their castles. The most crucial objective is to create a complete "enclosed area," meaning a region entirely surrounded by the player's walls and castles. Time for this phase is severely limited, creating significant pressure for players to act quickly and precisely.

2. Place Cannons Phase: After successfully completing wall construction and creating enclosed areas, players will place cannons within those areas. The number of cannons that can be placed depends on the size of the enclosed area. Cannons already present within castles also count towards the total available firepower. Strategic placement of cannons is vital to optimize firepower for the next phase.

3. Fire Phase: This is the core action phase of Rampart. Players control their placed cannons to aim and fire at enemy ships or other opposing units approaching from the sea or land. The goal is to destroy as many enemies as possible before they breach your walls. Players can select which cannon to control and fire at will, but they must constantly switch between cannons to cover the entire battlefield. Some enemies may fire back, damaging your walls or cannons.

To advance to the next level, players must successfully defend all their castles and destroy a sufficient number of enemies. If a castle is completely destroyed or if the player fails to enclose a castle within the time limit, the game ends. The game progressively increases in difficulty with more enemies, more complex terrain, and tighter building time limits, requiring players to have a perfect combination of strategic thinking, construction speed, and precise aiming skills.
