Introduce
QIX is a classic arcade game first released in 1981 and later ported to various platforms, including the NES. The primary objective of the game is to claim a majority of the screen by drawing lines.
Players control a small marker that can move along the already "claimed" edges of the play area or draw lines into unclaimed territory. When you draw a line and connect it back to a claimed edge, the area enclosed by that line becomes "claimed" and is filled in. To complete a level, the player must claim at least 75% of the screen (this percentage might vary by version).
The challenge comes from two main types of enemies:
- The Qix: A zigzagging entity that moves freely within the unclaimed area. If the Qix touches the line you are currently drawing, you lose a life.
- The Sprak: Spark-like entities that travel along the claimed lines. If a Sprak touches your marker, you also lose a life.
Additionally, after a certain amount of time, or if you are too slow, Fuse will appear and chase the line you are drawing, forcing you to complete it faster or face danger.
There are two types of lines you can draw: fast lines and slow lines. Fast lines claim territory more quickly but offer no bonus points. Slow lines claim territory more slowly but yield larger bonus points. The strategy involves balancing speed and score while evading enemies. When you claim an area, all Sprak inside that area disappear, providing a temporary advantage. Upon reaching the required screen percentage, you advance to the next level with increasing difficulty.
