In Pro Sport Hockey for the NES, players dive into exciting ice hockey matches. The gameplay focuses on fast-paced and intuitive action. You control a team of five players on the ice, including the goalie.

The main objective is to shoot the puck into the opponent's net while defending your own goal. Players can pass the puck between teammates, shoot to score goals, and perform checks to steal the puck from opponents. When you lose possession, you'll automatically control the player closest to the puck, or you can switch manually.

The game features a top-down perspective for most of the match, providing an overview of the ice rink. However, during special situations like shots on goal or face-offs, the view will switch to a closer perspective to enhance the drama.

Pro Sport Hockey does not delve into complex simulation modes or team management. Instead, it focuses on a pure arcade experience, where control skills and quick reflexes are key to victory. Matches typically have a time limit, and the team that scores more goals wins. The game also supports a two-player mode, allowing you to compete against friends to see who is the ice hockey master.
