Introduce
In Popeye, players control Popeye the Sailor Man, a strong-armed mariner, on a quest to collect items dropped by Olive Oyl. The main objective is to avoid Popeye's arch-rival Brutus (also known as Bluto), along with the wicked Sea Hag and other environmental hazards.
The game features three distinct stages, each with a different setting and collectible items:
- Stage 1: On a ship's deck. Olive Oyl drops hearts. Popeye must collect enough hearts before they fall into the water. Brutus will constantly pursue Popeye, attempting to collide with him.
- Stage 2: On a city street. Olive Oyl drops musical notes. In addition to Brutus, the Sea Hag also appears, throwing bottles from above. Popeye needs to move skillfully to dodge both.
- Stage 3: At a construction site. Olive Oyl drops letters that spell out "H-E-L-P". This stage is more complex, featuring Brutus, Sea Hag throwing bottles, and even vultures dropping skulls.
Popeye can move up and down stairs or climb ropes. When Popeye collects a can of spinach, he temporarily becomes invincible and can unleash a powerful punch to knock Brutus off the screen or stun enemies. Players can also utilize the environment, for example, by pushing barrels or bottles from higher platforms down onto Brutus or other foes.
Each collected item and defeated enemy grants points. The goal is to complete the stages and achieve the highest score. Popeye is a classic arcade platformer, requiring agility and quick reflexes.
