Play Action Football is an American football game for the NES, offering a fast-paced and accessible arcade experience. Players control one of two teams, alternating between offense and defense to try and score points and win the game.
On offense, you will select from a variety of available plays, including running plays and passing plays. As the quarterback, you'll use the controls to throw the ball to your receivers or hand it off to your running backs. The objective is to advance the ball into the opponent's end zone for a touchdown, or to attempt a field goal for three points.
On defense, you will also choose appropriate defensive formations. You control a player to tackle the opponent's ball carrier, attempting to sack the opposing quarterback, intercept passes, or block kicks. The game features a quick tempo, focusing more on continuous action rather than detailed simulation.
Basic American football rules are applied, including downs, penalties, and four quarters of play. The graphics and sound are simple, characteristic of 8-bit NES titles, but sufficient to provide an entertaining experience for football fans at the time.
