Mito Koumon - Sekai Manyuu Ki is a classic role-playing game (RPG) for the NES, based on the popular Japanese historical drama about Mito Koumon. Players take on the role of Mito Koumon, a retired vice-shogun, accompanied by his two loyal retainers, Suke-san and Kaku-san, embarking on a journey to explore and resolve issues across Japan.
The gameplay of Mito Koumon - Sekai Manyuu Ki adheres to the traditional RPG formula. Players navigate a world map, exploring towns, villages, and dungeons. During travel, random encounters with enemies are inevitable. The combat system is turn-based, where players select actions for each character in their party, such as attacking, using magic, using items, or fleeing. Each character has their own stats for health points (HP), magic points (MP), strength, defense, and speed, all of which increase as characters level up by defeating enemies and gaining experience points.
A distinctive element of the game, as well as the original drama, is the use of the "Inro" (the Shogun's seal). When confronting main antagonists or during climactic situations, Mito Koumon will reveal his true identity by presenting the Inro. This action often causes enemies to submit or flee, marking the end of a stage or a major challenge. This is a unique mechanic that provides a sense of victory and problem-solving not just through strength, but also through authority and wisdom.
In addition to combat, players also need to interact with non-player characters (NPCs) in towns to gather information, receive quests, and purchase equipment and items necessary for their journey. Managing equipment and items is crucial to ensure the party is always ready to face increasingly difficult challenges. The game offers a deep RPG adventure experience, combining historical and Japanese cultural elements with engaging RPG gameplay.
