Meitantei Holmes - M kara no Chousenjou is a detective adventure game for the NES, putting players in the shoes of the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes. The story begins when Holmes receives a mysterious challenge letter from someone calling themselves 'M', hinting at Professor Moriarty. The player's task is to help Holmes solve a series of complex cases orchestrated by 'M'.

The gameplay of Meitantei Holmes - M kara no Chousenjou primarily relies on a menu-driven interface. Players will use commands such as Move to travel to various locations in London, from his Baker Street apartment to crime scenes or suspicious places. The Look command allows Holmes to thoroughly examine his surroundings, searching for hidden evidence or clues. The Talk command is the main tool for interacting with other characters, from witnesses and suspects to ordinary citizens, in order to gather information and testimonies.

Additionally, Holmes has other important commands such as Item to use or examine collected objects, and Think for Holmes to synthesize information and make initial deductions. Game progression requires players to connect clues, analyze testimonies, and use logic to gradually uncover the truth behind each case. Each solved case opens up new challenges, leading players closer to the final confrontation with Professor Moriarty.
