Introduce
Legend of Zelda 2 - The Adventure of Link marked a significant departure in gameplay formula from its predecessor. While the first game primarily featured a top-down perspective for the entire adventure, The Adventure of Link introduced a unique blend of top-down world map exploration and side-scrolling action and combat segments.
Players control Link as he traverses the vast overworld of Hyrule from a top-down view. Here, Link can visit towns, temples, and special areas. When Link encounters enemies on the world map or enters a cave or palace, the screen transitions to a side-scrolling perspective, turning the game into a platforming action game. In these segments, Link can perform sword attacks, defend with his shield, and utilize special techniques like the down-thrust and up-thrust while jumping, which are crucial for overcoming obstacles and defeating enemies.
Another novel element is the introduction of an experience point (EXP) and leveling system. Link can accumulate EXP by defeating enemies, and once enough points are gathered, players can choose to upgrade one of three stats: Attack, Magic, or Life. This adds a deeper layer to the game's RPG mechanics. Link also learns various magic spells from wizards in towns, using magic points (MP) to cast spells such as healing, creating a shield, or transforming enemies.
The game is renowned for its high difficulty, demanding good combat skills and meticulous exploration from the player. Link's ultimate goal is to collect six crystals from six palaces, placing them into statues at the Great Palace to unlock the path to the cursed Princess Zelda and prevent the resurrection of Ganon.
